March 4, 2014 - Tonight we face two of the stronger teams in the league, Jay County and Winchester, also these are our first games at the high school. Our opponents played here last week.
Game 1 - Berne Bears 27 Jay County 8
As a coach I believe we got off to a slow start in this game. However, the halftime score was 15 - 2, so our defense certainly was successful. Kristen Wynn led all scorers with 13 points and was 3 for 5 at the free throw line. Jocelyn Willis anchored our defense with 7 steals to go with 8 points and 4 rebounds. We kept their shooters in front of us all night and contested every shot!
Game 2 - Berne Bears 29 Winchester - 18
This is the first team we have played that prepared for our half court trap. They broke through our trap quite a few times and hit some outside shots. Carlie Sealscott and Makayla Hamrick controlled the paint defensively and had 7 and 5 rebounds respectively. Peyton Pries scored in transition and in the half court with crossover drives to the basket to lead us with 10 points. Kristen Wynn scored 6 points. Jocelyn Willis shot 3 for 4 from the free throw line.
Peyton drives for two!

Some early ideas for our new team name were: South Adams Select (too pretentious) - Berne Blaze - Berne Dragons. Finally it was decided.

A SALUTE TO THE TEAM WE BORROWED OUR NAME FROM
October 2013 - Where it all started.
We got our start as the 4th grade Jr. Lady Starfires. Thank you to Coach Freeman for getting us started.
Our first organized basketball experience was the Fall Boomer League at Jay County High School. We were together for all of two practices before our first doubleheader gameday. We lost both games that day to Jay County and MG Elite.
Conditioning and fundamentals became the focus of our practices thereafter and positive results followed. The next four weeks we were undefeated with key victories over Blackford and eventual league champion MG Elite by a score of 20-8. Defensively, we held them to 1 point in the first half.
The regular season was now complete. Despite our 0-2 start, we were now 8-2 and entered the postseason tournament as the number 3 seed. On tournament day, we advanced to the semi-final round and lost a very tough game against number 2 seed Jay County by the score of 26-25. The last possession of the game had us inbounding the ball under our own basket with 4 seconds left in the game. Makayla Hamrick passed the ball inbounds to Vivian O'Dell who then passed to Jocelyn Willis. Jocelyn shot a contested 15 footer to win the game which fell off the rim and our season was over. We finished with a 9-3 record.
